Love is the central theme of God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Scripture consistently reveals that love originates from God, is demonstrated through Christ, and is required of all who belong to Him.

As stated in 1 John 3:16–18,

  • “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

Scripture commands believers to love one another because love reflects God’s very nature.

  • As illustrated in 1 John 4:7, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”
  • God Himself demonstrated this love sacrificially, as written in Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • Jesus defined the highest expression of love in John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
  • Because God has loved us in this manner, believers are commanded to reflect that same love. As stated in 1 John 4:11,
  • “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”
  • This love produces confidence and assurance, as written in 1 John 4:16–18, “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.”
  • Jesus reaffirmed love as the central commandment of the Kingdom in John 15:12, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”
  • This command was not new but rooted in the Law, as written in Leviticus 19:18, “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
  • Failure to love is evidence of spiritual darkness, as declared in 1 John 3:8, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
  • Jesus further emphasized love as the identifying mark of His disciples in John 13:34–35, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you… By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

The Apostle Paul summarized love’s supremacy in Romans 13:8,
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.”

  • Love is also the cure for hatred, as stated in Proverbs 10:12, “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”
  • The greatest revelation of love is salvation itself, as illustrated in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
  • The character, attributes, and eternal value of love are comprehensively revealed in 1 Corinthians chapter 13, which teaches that without love, all spiritual gifts and works are meaningless.

Love neutralizes hatred and prevents its destructive effects.

Spiritual Benefits of Love
  • The greatest benefit of love is the salvation of the soul. Love restores man to the nature of God and secures eternal life. As illustrated in John 14:1–3, “Let not your heart be troubled… I go to prepare a place for you.”
  • A heart of love restores fellowship with God that was lost in Eden, as stated in John 15:15–17, “Henceforth I call you not servants… I have called you friends.”
  • Love guarantees victory and answered prayers, as mentioned in Romans 8:37, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us,” and John 14:13, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do.”
  • Love produces peace, forgiveness, justice, mercy, integrity, hospitality, and stable homes.
Secular Benefits of Love
  • Love heals broken relationships, strengthens families, stabilizes societies, promotes good governance, reduces poverty, fosters peace, and advances human development.
  • It is evident that the evils plaguing society today can only be subdued through genuine love. No organization, nation, or ideology can produce lasting peace without love.
  • After years of prayer concerning Nigeria’s challenges, the Lord revealed that national restoration begins when people love God wholeheartedly and love one another, as commanded in Matthew 22:37 – 40, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart… and thy neighbor as thyself.”
  • Love is the pivot of life. Restoration must begin from homes, marriages, and families. Care for widows, orphans, the poor, and strangers in both the Old and New Testaments was driven by love.
  • Without love, the Church cannot reflect Christ, and society cannot experience peace. This generation is therefore called to return to love, in the fear of God, that all may be well.
